Cheeky, sensual
and highly topical: here comes
„Bonjour Liberté“
Vocalist and songwriter Marijke Jaehrling takes us to the Parisian boulevards of the 1920s and 1930s, where the bohemian exiles of Europe met. With her translations into French, fresh compositions and arrangements the German-Dutch composer finds completely new, surprising approaches to two prominent German representatives of this era: journalist and author Kurt Tucholsky - a collegue of Nobelprize winner Carl von Ossietzky - and the composer Kurt Weill, who both found a temporary home in Paris as a refuge against nazi facism. But the two jewish artists of Berlin never met each others in their whole lives, so Marijke is arrangin their rendez-vous with "Bonjour Liberté". It has become a cheeky, poetic album, oscillating between jazz and chanson, and with echoes of musette, rumba and tango even danceable. A musical claim for liberty and the lust of life - with a thrilling voice that creeps under your skin.
